Guidelines for Member Submissions to “Treasured Items” Collection
What to Submit
When we say “objects from the bungalow era,” we mean that in very broad terms. Submit photos and descriptions of anything that you find beautiful and/or useful.
- The style of the item is not important. Many items produced during the bungalow era (broadly, about 1900 to 1930) are not strictly Arts & Crafts in style. Do not get too hung up on whether it “qualifies” as Arts & Crafts. We are also interested in items from a decade before and after the Arts & Crafts period as well as contemporary items that are done in an Arts & Crafts style.
- It does not have to be an antique. The current Arts & Crafts revival has lasted far longer than the original Arts & Crafts movement, at least in the U.S. Many of today’s craftspeople are creating beautiful items that look great in bungalows. Let us see them.
- Your object does not have to be expensive. We do not want a collection consisting only of rare and pricey objets d’art (although we like seeing those, too). Practical items are interesting, too. Got an unusual vintage kitchen appliance or old shop tool? Send them along.
- Include a brief description of 150 to 200 words or less with your photo. Tell us what it is and why you love it or how you use it. Is your item a family heirloom? Was it discovered by a trash can in an alley? Did you bring it home from a memorable trip? Let us know.
Tips for Taking Photos
- Get close. Try to fill the frame with your object, whether it is a thimble or a Stickley settee.
- Light it well. If possible, move your object close to a window so the natural light falls on the side you are photographing.
- Photograph your item against a simple background, if possible.
- Smartphone photographs are fine. If you have a digital SLR camera, by all means use it. But today’s smartphone cameras are surprisingly capable.
We look forward to hearing from you! (Submissions from Twin Cities Bungalow Club members only, please.)
