Bungalows of St. Petersburg, Florida, Photo Collection

While California is often thought of as ground zero for beautiful bungalows, large numbers were built throughout the U.S. during the early 20th century. During a visit St. Petersburg, Florida, two Twin Cities Bungalow Club board members photographed neighborhoods filled with prime examples of the house type. St. Petersburg bungalows exhibit forms and details that are quite different than Minnesota bungalows. Wood siding—both horizontal lap boards and shingles—is quite common, while stucco is the dominant material here in the Twin Cities. And large, open porches are commonplace there, whereas our porches tend to be enclosed so they can be used in cooler weather.
