History Brief: In Like a Lion…
The classic lion trademark was created in 1916 for the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation (later to become Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1924). “Jackie” was the second MGM lion and the first celebrated roar. The roar was recorded separately and then married to a film of Jackie roaring, with Jackie’s head in a frame. The lion’s audible roar was first used in 1928 for the movie White Shadows in the South Seas—heard via a gramophone record because the movie was silent.
Jackie appeared before all black- and-white MGM films from 1928 to 1956, as well as the sepia-tinted opening credits of The Wizard of Oz (1939).
In addition to being MGM’s living logo, Jackie had “acting” roles in over 100 films, including several Tarzan movies.
